The best part of the sandwich is almost always the filling. That is why an open faced sandwich is better than a regular sandwich. It´s a simple concept but really, really good (and we have the Danish to thank for it)! It´s an art form with countless combinations.
With some nice bread and your favourite sandwich topping Danish Open Sandwiches can be a tasty and healthy lunch. Here I´m going to present a few ideas to top your sandwich. Or maybe you already do have a favorite open-faced sandwich? Please let me know what!

Danish Open Sandwiches (Smørrebrød)
Make 3 small Sandwiches per person
Buttered Dark Bread
Freshly ground black pepper
Thinly sliced Beet
Horseradish Cream with Cream Cheese
Pickled Red Onion
Slice of Orange
Fresh grated Horseradish
Cream of smoked Salmon, Apple and Red Onion
Slice of Lemon
Slice of Tomato
Finely diced Red Pepper
- Spread each bread slice with butter. Cover with arugula.
- Top the sandwiches with the different toppings. Sprinkle with salt and freshly ground black pepper.
- Enjoy together with beer and a snaps.
