Last weekend we went to Brännö on a staycation, the largest island within the southern Gothenburg archipelago. This weekend was a birthday gift from me to Freddy so it was all about celebration and time to rest and get away from the city – no have-to’s at home.
Since we knew that the only place to eat at on Brännö was at the Brännö Inn, we decided to eat at a restaurant near Saltholmen on the Friday since we were going to eat at the Inn on the next day. We had an amazing dinner at a place called Långedrag´s Inn. We shared a seafood platter with lots of different amazing tastings from their menu and a bottle of wine. After dinner we took the ferry from Saltholmen to Rödsten, Brännö, only a 20 minutes ride.
There are no private cars allowed on Brännö so the locals travel on foot, by bike or by transport moped. We stayed at Brännö Inn, which I think is the only place to stay at if you are a turist. From the ferry to Brännö Inn we then had to walk a short walk, approximately 10 minutes.
When you stay at the Inn it includes a nice breakfast buffet between 9-10 a.m. The breakfast buffet was fresh and included all you wanted (they had an amazing Skagenröra that I couldn´t get enough of). They also had a lot of options is you want to eat gluten and lactose free (super for us). You also get to enjoy the breakfast in a cosy environment, with old interior, and great service.
Apart from the Inn that we stayed at you could find a café near Rödsten and a folklore museum, which were closed at the time we were there. The largest attraction to the island is Brännö Dock. On certain days of the week in the summer, the Brännö Dock is open for people to dance upon.
Brännö is mostly made up of fields and typical nature for the archipelago with nice trails to hike. So at our stay on Brännö we walked and ate – walked and ate again! On our walk we never entered the neighbour island Galterö which is linked by a small earth walkway. Galterö is however suppose to be a huge granite rock, no humans lives there, but apparently lots of sheeps do.
On Saturday evening we enjoyed a nice three course dinner with lots of wine. Brännö is proud of their local beer and snaps so Freddy had to try both of them. For the starter we had Carpaccio of lightly smoked halibut with a Bloody Mary sauce. The Bloddy Mary sauce was amazing, I have to try to make it! For the main course we had grilled fillet of beef with pommes Anna, baked cherry tomatoes and bourgogne sauce (yum!). And for dessert I had Crème brûlée and Freddy Sorbet (of course – ice cream lover like he is).
Finally, the next day, when we were going home we missed the ferry. We stood at the wrong ferry stop and missed that it was departing from the other part of the island. So we had to wait 1.5 hour (!) until the next boat went. If you should remember anything before your trip to Brännö, it’s to make note of the two very different positioned ferry stops.
